Why Urology?

I made the differentiation between “surgery vs. medicine” fairly early on. I found a lot of different specialties very interesting including vascular surgery and general surgery but at the end of the day I kept coming back to urology, for a number of reasons. The diversity in the patient population, pathologies, medical therapies and operative procedures is something I really enjoyed about the specialty. Urology also allows me to have a diverse practice with respect to running clinics, procedures, scopes and ORs. Having patient’s I am able to follow long-term is something I also really loved about urology.  Last but not least, patient outcomes are quite good in urology and patient’s are typically quite satisfied and grateful for the care they receive given that we are able to help make differences in not only their quantity of life, but also their quality of life. 

 

Why did you choose Ottawa for residency?

Even though it’s quite far from my hometown, I love the city and love it enough to stay for another 5 years! It’s an awesome place if you love the outdoors but also want a “big city/small city” feel. A lot of great little areas with coffee shops and awesome restaurants/bakeries. I did medical school here and 5 years in, I’m still discovering new places to this day. 

 

What is your favourite thing about the Ottawa Urology residency program?

 I am probably biased because I did medical school at Ottawa and never got to experience any other programs but I do believe that the people, learning and work environment here is second to none. There is a good balance between service and learning. We have distinguished staff who are fantastic educators and mentors and create an extremely open, fun, and positive learning environment whether it be in the clinic, OR or after work hours! There is not a single day I  have been afraid to ask a question or ask for help from my co-residents and staff. The resident group here is also very strong, supportive, and collegial and gave me a good sense of the quality of people, clinicians and surgeons that come out of this program. 

 

Interests/Hobbies:

I love travelling, eating, cooking and baking, weight-lifting, volleyball, spikeball, biking, and anything else that involves the sun, outdoors and being with friends. 

 

Fun Fact:

I’ve gone bungee jumping off the highest bungee bridge in the world (Bloukrans Bridge in South Africa)!
